The Hawkeyes started off the season well by beating the Black Bears of Maine 46-3. The running game looked impressive with Greene, O’Meara and Hampton each getting rushing TDs and 200 yards together. The defense looked as strong as expected, holding the Bears to only 83 yeards passing with 2 INTs.
It looks like running back by committee, which isn’t a bad thing. When none of them stand out, let them share the carries and rotate in the fresh legs.
It may also be quarterback by committee too. Christensen was benched in the 2nd quarter after throwing an interception. Stanzi replaced him and did well. Christensen came back in the 2nd half. The two QBs combined for 18-29-212, which are better numbers than the Hawks have seen in a while.
Granted Maine is a I-AA team (or whatever they call it now), so we can’t read too much into this game. In two weeks we’ll see how the Hawks handle a pumped up Cyclown team in Iowa City.
