Draft 2007

Three Hawkeyes were drafted in 2007 NFL Draft. Guard Marshal Yanda went in the third round to Baltimore. Tight end Scott Chandler went in the fourth to San Diego. Center/guard Mike Elgin went in the 7th round to New England. I was a little surprised to see Yanda and Chandler drop so far. I thought they both could have been drafted as early as the second round. Unfortunately for Chandler he has All-Pro Antonio Gates in front of him.

Three Hawkeyes went undrafted but managed to sign free agent contracts. Drew Tate signed with the Rams, Miguel Merrick with the Chargers and Marcus Paschal with the Seahawks.

Congrats to the former Hawks.

Tyler Smith leaving for Tennessee

The Alford effect continues in Iowa City as freshman Tyler Smith, one of the bright points to a disappointing season, is leaving the University and transferring to a school closer to home in Tennessee. Smith originally committed to Tennessee, but changed his mind after Bruce Pearl replaced Buzz Peterson as coach. Most likely, Smith will transfer to the Volunteers. Smith’s family is in Tennessee including his father who is suffering from lung cancer and his infant son.

I guess next season will really be a rebuilding year.

Basketball team loses recruit and player

One of the incoming recruits for next season, Dairese Gary, has been released from his letter of intent by the University. Before you get too worried about this, he has yet to qualify academically and he might not have been able to go to Iowa anyway.

Jarryd Cole has announced he is sticking with Iowa and Jake Kelly will announce his decision soon.

The Hawks also lost Josh Crawford who is expected to transfer to a school closer to home in California.
