Virginia Tech 69 Iowa 65

Iowa lost their matchup in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge against the Hokies of Va Tech. It was a defensive battle as neither team had a very good shooting night. The Hawkeyes suffered from too many turnovers, giving up 18 to Va Tech’s 8. Nine of the Hawkeye turnovers were from steals. Adam Haluska had a hot hand with 24 points and Tony Freeman added 11 from the bench.

With the loss the Hawks drop to 2-4. The rest of the Big 10 didn’t fare much better, going 3-7 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

Alamo Bowl opponent

Yesterday Texas A&M accepted a bid to play in the Holiday Bowl against Cal. The Aggies were a popular pick to play the Hawkeyes in the Alamo Bowl. It was also announced that the loser of the Nebraska-Oklahoma game would go to the Cotton Bowl. So who does that leave for the Hawkeyes? Texas and Kansas State. Texas seems to be the more likely opponent. The alternatives for the Longhorns are the Sun and Gator Bowls. I don’t have any information on what bowl picks first for the Big 12, so I can’t really speculate.

I’d rather face Kansas State as I explained earlier.

Latest bowl projections

The weekend’s college games have shaken up the bowl projections, especially in the Big 12, which is who will send a team to the play the Hawkeyes in the Alamo Bowl.

CBS Sportsline Iowa vs. Texas
Fox Sports Iowa vs. Texas A&M

Over at SI.com Stewart Mandel seems to think the Longhorns will fall to the Alamo as the Holiday will take the loser of the Championship and the Cotton will take the Aggies.

With Texas dropping out of the lead for the Big 12 South, that means they will fall out of BCS consideration. Oklahoma and Nebraska will meet in the Big 12 Championship (anyone want to argue that the Big 10 should have a championship…didn’t think so). The winner goes to a BCS bowl. The loser, if it is Nebraska, goes to the Cotton Bowl. If Nebraska wins, there is a chance that Oklahoma still goes BCS, but I think that is a stretch. So you can assume that no. 1 will go BCS, no. 2 will go to the Cotton Bowl. No. 3, Texas, will play at the Holiday Bowl. No. 4 will play Iowa in the Alamo. That sure looks like the Aggies. I can’t see Missouri. They have one more loss both in conference and overall.
