Big 10 so far

I read Stewart Mandel’s column about the Big 10 race so far. It certainly has been a surprise. Everyone was picking Ohio St, Michigan, Iowa and Purdue to contend for the title if not multiple BCS bowls. Now both Iowa and Michigan have 2 loses and are out of the BCS race unless someone else implodes. Instead, Michigan St, Wisconsin, Penn St and Minnesota are all undefeated.

I think that Minnesota and Penn St are pretenders. Minnesota seems like a one dimensional team, all Laurence Maroney. All a team has to do is stop him and Minnesota doesn’t the talent at the rest of the positions to compensate. The Big 10 has quite a few defenses that can stop the run, so I can’t see them being the in the hunt.

Penn St has won all their games, but has looked weak in most of them. They squeaked by South Florida and Northwestern. Maybe South Florida is a little more impressive now that they beat Louisvile. Penn St has plenty of talent, but Paterno can’t put it together for a win anymore.

Michigan St has looked very impressive with wins against Notre Dame in South Bend and racking up over 40 points per game in all 4 of their wins. I can’t speak to their D, so who knows? They play at Ohio St in 2 weeks and that may the game that determines the Big 10 winner.

I don’t think Wisconsin has proved themselves pretender or contender yet. They struggled against Bowling Green and North Carolina, but beat Temple 65-0. Their win against Michigan says more about Michigan’s weakness than Wisconsin’s strengths. The one thing that works in Wisconsin’s favor is their schedule. They play Iowa and Purdue at home and don’t play Ohio St at all. Their only difficult away game is Minnesota. Wisconsin could end up at the top of the standings thanks to a weak schedule.

I’ll wait another week or so to make any predictions about the final standings and bowl lineup.

That was bad. Really bad.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Hawkeyes look worse than they did yesterday. On offense they couldn’t run the ball. Tate was able to complete some passes (152 yards), but not like his usual performance (0 TDs). Tate’s frustration was evident when he spiked the ball in the 3rd quarter after a sack. On defense, other than a couple forced fumbles, they looked terrible. The Buckeyes were able to run and pass at will and the D seemed to forget how to make an open field tackle.

This game displayed all of Iowa’s weaknesses. Ohio St is a very good team and I’d have to say they are the class of the Big 10 this year. Pittman and Smith are a good tandem in the backfield and the D is very impressive. Their LBs certainly outclassed ours.

I don’t know why it is that Iowa always looks bad in Columbus. Certainly the Buckeyes were looking for revenge after last year’s asskicking in Iowa City. I don’t know why it is that Iowa can win in Ann Arbor in any given year, but Columbus is beyond us.

Next weekend is Illinois at home, which should be an easier game for the Hawks. Right now I can’t see the Hawks going better than 8-3 and 7-4 isn’t unreasonable. Away games against Wisconsin and Purdue are the ones that worry me most. Michigan and Minnesota are troubling too, but I really can’t say how good either team is.

A win is a win

Iowa beat UNI as expected. I can’t say I am very happy about the win. The offense looked good. Tate was nearly perfect. Albert Young and Clinton Solomon had some big plays. But how did UNI hang 21 points on our D? Sure, two TDs happened in the 4th quarter, but our 2nd or 3rd string shouldn’t be giving up 2 scores to a 1-AA team.

Next up at Ohio St. The Buckeyes looked very beatable yesterday allowing a San Diego St team to stay in the game deep into the 2nd half. I really don’t think Iowa will put together a complete game against Ohio St. The defense worries me. The offense worries me. Iowa St doesn’t have nearly as good a defense as Ohio St. and they were able to stop us. If Iowa can put together a complete game, they can surprise the Buckeyes. If they are off their game at all, forget it.
