Hawks win ugly

Hawks won again on Saturday up in Minneapolis at Kinnick North. The game was very ugly. I couldn’t believe how easily Minnesota ran the ball on us. But their QB couldn’t complete a pass except to Iowa DBs. The defense made some huge plays, especially at the end of the game. Minnesota was driving into field goal range and they were pushed out of their kicker’s range by a couple tackles for loss. Iowa managed to get 4 turnovers while giving up none.

Next Saturday has Wisconsin visiting Iowa City. Wisconsin’s offense is a lot like Minnesota. They have a good tailback and a weak QB. Wisconsin’s defense is much better than Minnesota. Even though it is in Iowa City, I don’t like the Hawks’ chances. It won’t matter too much. The Hawks are pretty much guaranteed of getting a Florida bowl. If they win it will be the Capital One Bowl, if they lose it will be the Outback Bowl. I am very happy to see them return to Florida for another bowl.

I do not think this is a great Hawkeye team. Their offense is one dimensional. Drew Tate has become a great QB, but if they play a team with a decent secondary, Iowa will pay for not having a run attack. The defense is exceptional. There has been only one game where the D didn’t show up, Arizona St. I am a little worried that our bowl will be a repeat of the ASU game, but we’ll have to see who our opponent is.

Big 10 Champs!!

Well, co-champs. My Hawkeyes soundly beat Wisconsin today in Iowa City. The defense held Wisconsin to 7 points. They forced 4 turnovers. They completely rattled the Badger QB. He threw 3 INTs and coughed up the ball once. They prevented any running game at all. Tate made some mistakes and threw 3 INTs himself, but Wisconsin could never get any points from the turnovers.

Since Ohio St beat Michigan earlier in the afternoon that makes Iowa the co-champs with Michigan. This is the Hawks second championship in 3 years. Not bad for a rebuilding year. The Hawks should play in the Capital One Bowl on Jan 1 in Orlando. Most likely they will play Georgia.

I was sad that this was the last home game for some great players. Matt Roth, Chad Greenway, Warren Holloway, Jonathan Babineaux and Sean Considine will all be missed next season. I suspect the offense will be greatly improved next year with a stable running attack, a more mature O-line and another great year for Tate, Solomon, Hinkel, and Chandler. The defense is losing so many impact players, I will not have high expectations from them. Their secondary should be better as they are mostly sophomores now.

Here is Ferentz’s records at Iowa.

1999 1-10
2000 3-9
2001 7-5
2002 11-2
2003 10-3
2004 9-2 –so far

Hawks roll

Yesterday Purdue visited Iowa City and came away with their 4th straight loss. It wasn’t easy. Purdue has a good defense and so great receivers. Kyle Orton was injured so he didn’t play. That helped out the defense a lot. The Iowa D had a huge game. They had 6 sacks, 2 blocked field goal attempts, 2 INTs and 1 fumble recovery. Here are some summaries of the game.

We play in Minnesota next and I like our chances on this game. Minnesota has lost 4 of their last 5. Against Wisconsin yesterday their running attack was completely stopped and the Wisconsin QB had a huge day. Sounds like Iowa’s game plan is already set.

By the way, ESPN is now picking Iowa to go to the Outback Bowl. That would be great to make it 3 straight January Florida bowls
